Smartphone fingerprint scanning heads to mainstream

Synaptics to ship in-display fingerprint sensors with Vivo smartphones

Many big-name technology companies, such as Samsung and Apple, have attempted to protect their consumers by offering various methods in order to lock your phone and ultimately keep your private information safe.

As expected, vivo is demonstrating the first smartphone with an in-screen fingerprint sensor right here at CES 2018.

As for the smartphone, Vivo has said that the smartphone is ready for production.

New York City Just Sued 5 Oil Companies. Could Chicago?
Bill McKibben, an author and co-founder of climate advocacy group 350.org, praised the city's actions on Wednesday. The cities of San Francisco and Oakland and the city and county of Santa Cruz have also filed suit this year.

Synaptics told us it needs a couple more years of development to reduce the cost and size for such technology to become a viable option for our smartphones and other mobile devices. Vivo In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Technology replaces the physical fingerprint button on the screen, laying the foundation for a truly immersive experience. The prompt can appear even when the screen is off, and will disappear when it is no longer needed. The tool will allow its users to protect their phones by an in-display fingerprint sensor resulting in detecting its rightful owner.

The in-display scanner reads the user's fingerprint to unlock the device, without taking up precious screen space. Godfrey let us play with the phone and, honestly, it works like a magic.

For now, the under-the-display fingerprint sensor works with only OLED displays.

Dropbox confidentially files for IPO
The law allowed private companies with revenue of less than $1 billion to confidentially file IPO registration statements. Venky Ganesan, a venture capitalist at Menlo Ventures, said a Dropbox IPO would be seen as a harbinger for startups.

Vivo had showcased a concept phone with an under-display fingerprint sensor provided by Qualcomm at last year's MWC in Shanghai.

As you touch the screen, the lit-up fingerprint is then reflected into an in-display fingerprint sensor which is then authenticated. The sensor, that was reviewed and used at CES was on Vivo, a Chinese phone maker's brand, and was tested out by CNet.

You unlock the Vivo phone like any other phone with a front-facing sensor - just tap, and the phone unlocks.

Super Mario Odyssey getting free minigame and outfit DLC
By having a hard-to-find balloon and finding others' much quicker, you can earn coins and climb up an online leaderboard ranking. The first is called Hide It, which gives players 30 seconds to hide balloons throughout the world.

The overall process takes just 0.7 seconds, not quite as fast as the 0.2 seconds that are commonly advertized for traditional fingerprint scanners these days, but still faster than the average of 1.4 seconds it takes to use face recognition. A fingerprint sensor is more practical. You can find out more details about this new technology over at Vivo at the link below. But sadly none of the big smartphone manufacturers were able to implement this feature in their flagship phones.
