CT to end children's health program unless it gets money from Congress

Instead, they've spent their time first trying to do away with health insurance for adults through the Affordable Care Act and, failing to do that, they're now haggling about giving states the money needed for CHIP.

CHIP, a program for families who don't qualify for Medicaid but have difficulty buying health insurance, was last renewed in 2015 and is set to run out of money in March.

The Children's Health Insurance Program, or CHIP, is a 20-year-old federal program meant to aid children whose families are not so needy that they would qualify for Medicaid assistance, but who are also unable to pay for health coverage on their own. They have not listened to us.

Since the start of October, the families of 9 million children - including more than 180,000 in Pennsylvania - have been calling on lawmakers to reauthorize the Children's Health Insurance Program. "CHIP is a central issue that must be resolved before we adjourn for this year".

Meanwhile, several states, including Pennsylvania, are on the verge of running out of funding for this vital program. The spokesperson added, as of right now, Pennsylvania has not needed to use any reserves to fund the program.

The program continues to have bipartisan support, Americans are told, yet Republicans in the majority and Democrats in the minority can not agree on a funding mechanism.

ALL Kids, a healthcare coverage program for children under 19, will no longer enroll children beginning January 1, 2018.

"Why should anybody spend even five minutes of the holidays worrying about whether or not their child who's been enrolled in the Children's Health Insurance Program is still enrolled?" he said. The funding deadline for CHIP was September 30, but the program was overlooked due to lawmakers' focus.

When CHIP was created in 1997, Minnesota already offered coverage to most of these children.

For example, Congress could have reversed some of the Obamacare damage to CHIP by eliminating its Maintenance of Effort (MOE) provision, which requires states to maintain whatever upper eligibility limits they had for CHIP in order to receive funds.

ALL Kids is a low-priced, comprehensive healthcare coverage program for children under age 19.

Minnesota is expecting to be reimbursed by the federal government for the costs it has incurred since the funding lapsed in October.

It's past time for Congress to step up and fund CHIP. We need to reauthorize this important program quickly to provide certainty for families across West Virginia.
