She got a fraudulent loan for $22,500 and then converted the credit on six credit cards into $60,000 of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

"These transactions were created to avoid transaction reporting requirements, hide the identity, source and destination of the illicitly obtained monies, and, ultimately, benefit ISIS", the Department of Justice statement noted.

She was arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport on July 31, allegedly in the process of fleeing to Syria after using the Bitcoin digital currency to send thousands of dollars to Islamic State fighters overseas. "Shahnaz, a US citizen, was arrested yesterday". On top of which, she allegedly tried to launder virtual currency to bolster terrorists' dwindling financial support.

The Pakistani-born woman worked as a lab technician at a hospital in Manhattan until June, prosecutors said.

Michigan State Police investigate human remains in case of missing Skelton brothers
Police confirmed the remains were undergoing DNA testing in Texas to determine who the skeletons belonged to. Andrew, Alexander, and Tanner Skelton went missing in November of 2010 and have not been seen since.

A suburban NY hospital technician accused of using bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies to launder money meant for the militant group Islamic State was arrested on charges of money laundering in support of a foreign terrorist organization and bank fraud, prosecutors said Thursday.

According to court documents, Shahnaz spent time in Jordan past year volunteering with the Syrian American Medical Society, which brought her to Syrian refugee camps where the Islamic State "exercises significant influence".

Shahnaz quit her job in June and attempted to travel to Syria at the end of July.

"As a health care professional, in 2016, Ms. Shahnaz was a volunteer with the Syrian American Medical Society assisting other health care providers in delivering lifesaving medical care to Syrian refugees", her attorney, Steve Zissou, tells NPR.

If convicted, Zoobia Shahnaz faces up to 30 years in prison for bank fraud and up to 20 years for each of the money laundering counts (converting credit cards into Bitcoin).

"Her itinerary included a multiday layover in Istanbul, Turkey - a common point of entry for individuals traveling from Western countries to join ISIS in Syria", prosecutors said.

"What she saw made her devoted to lessening the suffering of a lot of the Syrian refugees and everything she does is for that objective", Mr Zissou said outside the courthouse, to the BBC.

Agents said she gave false and conflicting explanations about her overseas wire transfers. It's safe to say that her motivation, as expressed by her lawyer, should be called into question. Authorities arrested her in her home on Long Island Wednesday evening, and she was then remanded into custody the following day in order to stand trial in January.
