Sex assault victim advocate applauds Time's 'Person of the Year' choice

Person of the year

"The Silence Breakers" - those who have shared their stories about sexual assault and harassment - have been named Time magazine's Person of the Year.

It's a recognition of the cultural reckoning this year and the #MeToo movement, which represents the people, mostly women, who have fueled a worldwide discussion about sexual harassment and assault. "But it has actually been simmering for years, decades, centuries", Time's story said. The Time has a powerful explanation to it. "But it began, as great social change almost always does, with individual acts of courage". "I was trying to change my community", Tarana Burke, who created the hashtag, told NBC.

The tweets, Instagram and Facebook posts began after actress-activist Alyssa Milano followed on a suggestion from a friend of a friend on Facebook and tweeted: "If you've been sexually harassed or assaulted write "me too" as a reply to this tweet".

Page Six was told that on Tuesday - the night before Time editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal was due to sit down with Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb to make the much-anticipated announcement - a lowly staffer accidentally included the cover in an online gallery that was supposed to only include past Person of the Year covers.

In the wake of sexual misconduct revelations about Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey and dozens of other prominent men in United States politics, media and entertainment, millions of people worldwide have shared their stories about being sexually harassed and assaulted. The hashtag #MeToo (swiftly adapted into #BalanceTonPorc, #YoTambien, #Ana_kaman and many others), which to date has provided an umbrella of solidarity for millions of people to come forward with their stories, is part of the picture, but not all of it... Also included is Selma Blair, who accused director James Toback of misconduct, with Swift speaking out against Denver radio DJ David Mueller whom she prevailed over in court this summer.

They are shown alongside Isabel Pascual, a 42-year-old strawberry picker from Mexico (not her real name); Adama Iwu, a 40-year-old corporate lobbyist in Sacramento; and Susan Fowler, 26, a former Uber engineer whose allegation brought down Uber's CEO. Her testimony was widely covered.

LaVar: Sons LiAngelo, LaMelo sign with agent
The back-and-forth continued, and Trump eventually tweeted that he "should have left them in jail", referring to the players. However, the elder Ball told ESPN that won't be the case.

The president tweeted last month that he was "probably" going to be given the title, adding that he "took a pass" because he would have had to agree to an interview and a photo shoot. Time has disputed his account.
