Rep. Conyers announces retirement from Congress; endorses son to replace him

The albatross that Democrats deserve

"My legacy can't be compromised or diminished in any way by what we're going through now", said the congressman, who called into the radio show from the hospital where he was taken last week after complaining of lightheadedness. "And I want everyone to know how much I appreciate the support that...incredible, undiminished support I've received across the years of my supporters, not only in my district but across the country as well", Conyers said.

He also endorsed his son, John Conyers III, to replace him in his congressional seat.

Conyers was first elected to the House in 1964.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi dug herself into a hole when she defended Conyers on Meet The Press.

The House Ethics Committee announced last week it has opened an investigation into allegations.

Democratic Rep. Jerrold Nadler of NY said he was saddened by the resignation of his "friend and mentor" but added: "There can be no tolerance for behavior that subjects women to the kind of conduct that has been alleged".

She says the Republican governor has wide discretion as to the timing of the special election.

YouTube employs more people to identify extremist video content
The reports led several big brands including Mars and Adidas to pull advertising from the site. She did not say how many people now monitor YouTube for offensive videos.

Earlier, Conyers' grand nephew, Michigan State Senator Ian Conyers, told the New York Times that he planned to run for the elder Conyers' seat.

A woman who says she worked for U.S. Rep. John Conyers for more than a decade says he slid his hand up her skirt and rubbed her thighs while she was sitting next to him in the front row of a church.

John Conyers has stepped aside as the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee.

Conyers has remained hard headed through this all, denying the allegations, while his lawyer criticized the alleged victims. That settlement came to light in mid-November, setting off the cascade of allegations against the congressman.

Grubbs witnessed assault on other women.

Elisa Grubbs made the allegation in an affidavit released by her attorney, Lisa Bloom.

His accuser, former aide Marion Brown, recently told NBC's "Today" show that Conyers touched her inappropriately and invited her to a Chicago hotel room to discuss business before propositioning her for sex.

Croatian war criminal dies after drinking poison in United Nations court
The court, established by the United Nations in 1993, is due to close when its mandate expires at the end of this year. The Yugoslav army targeted Bosnian Muslims and Croats in a brutal conflict that killed more than 100,000 people.

Conyers said in the interview that this in no way will tarnish his legacy. "I hope my retirement will be viewed in the larger perspective of my record of service as I enter a new chapter", the statement from Conyers read. It featured about a dozen speakers and lasted a little more than an hour.

In April 1968, four days after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., Conyers introduced the first bill proposing a holiday in his honor.

He also hired civil rights heroine Rosa Parks to serve on his congressional staff in his Detroit office.

If Conyers were to resign, it would help Democrats quiet demands that some action be taken against him.

The rally at the Hartford Memorial Baptist Church on James Couzens in Detroit comes as some members of the media and Congress have called for Conyers to resign.

Conyers has denied the allegations of sexual misconduct.

"I think that we lose our moral authority if we also don't call out those we love who have done things that are bad", said Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash.
