Police say two people suffered minor injuries when a gun discharged at a mall crowded with holiday shoppers in New York's Hudson Valley.

A man discharged a single shot into the floor outside the American Eagle Outfitters store at the Galleria mall in Middletown, a city in the Hudson Valley region of the USA state of NY, local police chief Robert Hertman told a news conference Sunday evening.

The entire mall was closed and on lockdown as of 5 p.m. Police would not confirm reports of an active shooter, but said, "Officers are at the mall and they are handling the situation". It's not immediately clear whether they were shot or injured in another way.

Police say there were likely thousands of shoppers in the mall at the time and the building was evacuated successfully. Police are still searching for the man whose gun went off.
