Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a bill allowing Russia to register global media outlets as foreign agents in a quid pro quo to the USA demand made to a Kremlin-funded TV channel. The document was published on the official legal information portal. But Moscow saw the forced registration as an obstacle to Russian media activities in the United States and a step violating the freedom of speech. The bill comes into effect on the day it is officially published.

This measure was a response to the demand of the US Department of Justice to RT America, a US branch of the Russian television company, to register as a foreign agent.

"Americans have a right to know who is acting in the United States to influence the USA government or public on behalf of foreign principals", acting assistant attorney general for National Security Dana J. Boente said in a statement at the time that RT registered.

"According to the text of the law, media that receive financial assistance from foreign states or organizations can be recognized as foreign agents, while the decision on which outlets will be classified as "foreign agents" will be taken by the Ministry of Justice".

Margarita Simonyan, editor in chief of RT, posted a statement on its website, saying, "Choosing between a criminal case and registration, we have chosen the latter".
