Dish Network gets CBS back after brief service blackout

US Sen. Ed Markey urges Dish, CBS to settle dispute that could black out of Sunday's Patriots game

The new agreement immediately enables college football fans to watch SEC and NFL games Friday and Saturday of the holiday weekend.

At the heart of the dispute is how much money Dish is willing to pay CBS to retransmit the network's signal.

"As it stands, Dish customers won't be watching CBS in the days and weeks ahead", CBS said in its statement.

Hundreds of thousands of Dish subscribers lost access to their local CBS affiliates Tuesday morning as the satellite provider and network engaged in unsuccessful negotiations about carriage rates. Dish faced a backlash from angry subscribers who couldn't get the most-watched U.S. TV network and have more ways to cut their pay-TV subscriptions and replace them with cheaper online entertainment.

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but the deal ended a two-day blackout that affected major markets such as Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Atlanta. CBS last went dark on Dish for roughly 12 hours in 2014 during a similar impasse.

Besides Chicago, other affected markets were NY (where CBS owns WCBS and WLNY), Los Angeles (KCBS and KCAL), Philadelphia (KYW and WPSG), Dallas (KTVT and KTXA), San Francisco (KPIX and KBCW), Atlanta (WUPA), Boston (WBZ and WSBK), Seattle (KSTW), Tampa (WTOG), Detroit (WWJ and WKBD), Minneapolis (WCCO), Miami (WFOR and WBFS), Denver (KCNC), Sacramento (KOVR and KMAX), Pittsburgh (KDKA and WPCW) and Baltimore (WJZ).

In a comment on the renewed business relations, Dish Network's VP of Marketing, Programming and Media Sales Warren Schlichting said, "We are grateful to our customers for their patience this holiday week as months of work has resulted in a deal that delivers CBS for years to come". The antenna offer was based on the reception available at the subscriber's home.

The multi-year agreement covers CBS-owned stations across the country plus CBS-owned cable networks CBS Sports Netwokr, Pop and Smithsonian Channel.
