London Will Start Powering Public Buses With Coffee Grounds

Transport for London has been turning to biofuels to curb carbon emissions trialling a fuel made with used cooking oil from the catering industry

Technology firm bio-bean says it has added a biofuel made by blending oil extracted from waste coffee grounds to the public transport fuel supply. "We've started in the UK, but imagine the potential of a country like The United States that drinks more than 164 billion cups of coffee a year", he added.

Waste coffee grounds will be used to make biofuels to power some of London's buses from today, according to a media report.

Bio-bean said there is "no formal agreement" to continue using its coffee oil in London, but it hopes to quickly find new markets and applications.

UCLA Bruins fire Jim Mora after six seasons
Mora led UCLA to back-to-back 10-win seasons in 2013-14, but the Bruins struggled the last three seasons with a 17-19 record. The Bruins finish the regular season at home against California on Friday, needing a win to be bowl-eligible.

Working with biofuel producer Argent Energy, the B20 biofuel contains a 20% bio-component and 80% cent traditional diesel.

The first batch of 6,000 liters, or about 1,580 gallons, would power one bus for a year, Bio-bean said in a news release.

BUSES are now powered by coffee. Founder Arthur Kay said it was a "great example of what can be done when we start to reimagine waste as an untapped resource".

Redskins RB Chris Thompson Carted Off With Knee Injury
Prior to the Redskins' Week 11 game, Thompson was their best offensive player on the field, showing off his dual-threat ability. Two long Mark Ingram runs put the Saints in field goal range, and Will Lutz kicked the game-winner from 28 yards out.

The operator of the public transport system in the British capital, Transport for London have been looking for the opportunity to move to a less environmentally harmful fuel.

Shell's collaboration with bio-bean and Argent Energy is part of Shell's #makethefuture energy relay, which supports entrepreneurs by turning energy innovations into a positive impact for communities worldwide. A good idea can come from anywhere, but with the scale and commitment of Shell, we can help enable true progress.

Bio-bean claims coffee sales create more than 200,000 tonnes of waste each year in London, and the company is collecting as much waste as it can from both factories and coffee shops.

Japan bolstering defenses against North Korea threat, Abe says
North Korea sparked fears of World War 3 after ignoring global sanctions to continue developing and testing nuclear weapons. The past two months have seen a relative lull and it has not tested a missile since firing one over Japan on September 15 .

Currently, Bio-Bean has enough on hand (six thousand litres) to power one bus for a year, but access to raw material shouldn't be an issue once things get up and running.
