Woman Pleads Guilty To Marrying Her Own Mother

Misty and Jody's brother Cody Spann said his mother manipulated both his sister and brother into marriage

An Oklahoma woman who married her biological mother last year was sentenced to 10 years of probation Tuesday for committing incest.

Misty Spann pleaded guilty to incest and will be on probation with two of those years under the supervision of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections.

Patrica Spann is set to appear in court in January, 2018.

Incest in Oklahoma is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Despite knowing about their close relation, Patricia convinced her daughter that they weren't doing anything wrong.

Investigators told News 4 that 43-year-old Patricia Spann lost custody of Misty, 26, and two other children when they were young. She said she was reconnected with them in 2014 and she and Misty "hit it off".

She "had looked into" marrying her daughter and wrongly determined she it was allowed because her name no longer appears on Misty's birth certificate, the document added.

Detectives subsequently learned Patricia had also married her son in 2008. He said that after that marriage was annulled, Patricia set her sights on Misty, allegedly threatening her with poisoning and kidnapping if Misty refused.

The marriage between Misty and her mother was annulled October 12, six weeks after Misty filed for an annulment "by reason of illegality and fraud", the Tulsa World reports.

DHS workers discovered the marriage during a child welfare investigation and reported it to police, though the specifics of the preliminary DHS case are not known. In the complaint, Misty stated that her mother "consulted with three separate attorneys who advised there would be no problem with the marriage".

"I think she's worthless she put my sister into this".

KOCO 5 reported Patricia's marriages to her children were "all ploys to manipulate state laws". "Why would you want to be with one of your own kids?"

Experts believe that this effect evolved to prevent inbreeding.
