Iran shows off missile to mark 38th anniversary of US Embassy takeover

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei addresses students in Tehran on Nov. 2

On November 4, 1979, and in less than a year after the victory of the Islamic Revolution that toppled a US-backed monarchy, Iranian university students who called themselves "students following the line of (the late) Imam (Khomeini)" seized the U.S. embassy in Tehran, which had become a center of espionage and planning to overthrow the newly established Islamic system in Iran.

Iran showed off its most powerful missile, the liquid-filled, surface-to-surface Qadr, which the semiofficial Fars News agency says it can travel 1,243 miles, including to Israel.

A few months after the toppling of the US -backed government of the Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Iranian students, believing the USA embassy was being used as cover for espionage activity aimed at overthrowing the Islamic Republic, stormed the building.

It comes amid uncertainty about its nuclear deal with world powers after United States president Donald Trump announced he was decertifying the accord. Additionally, a senior official accused President Donald Trump of a "crazy" return to confrontation with Tehran. Under that deal, most global sanctions on Iran were lifted in exchange for Tehran curbing nuclear activity.

Responding to Trump and his administration's attempts to isolate Iran diplomatically, Khamenei said his foes in the U.S. Trump's decision did not undo the agreement, which European countries and Iran continue to support, but allows Congress to decide whether to reimpose certain sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

In a recent remark, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called Washington Iran's "number one enemy", accusing it of "bullying" over the deal and "holding grudges" against "a tireless and resilient nation". He also laid additional sanctions on Iran's elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Mobile, Sprint Call Off Merger Talks
It slipped behind T-Mobile to become the country's fourth biggest mobile provider, and has a significant amount of debt. But with the new Trump administration, it was thought regulators might be more relaxed about a merger.

State media reported that when Ali Shamkhani, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, spoke to a rally in Tehran, he said, "All the governments confirm that the American president is a insane individual who is taking others toward the direction of suicide". The United States broke off diplomatic relations with Iran in 1980 and the ties between the two countries have remained severed ever since.

Iran, in turn, has accused the US of destabilizing the Middle East through various military interventions that Tehran attributes to the rise of Islamist militant groups such as Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (ISIS).
