Bills acquire Kelvin Benjamin from Panthers

BREAKING: Panthers Trade WR Kelvin Benjamin to Bills For Draft Picks

General manager Brandon Beane hasn't been shy to deal players away in his first year with the team but minutes before the National Football League trade deadline, the Buffalo Bills made a big splash, adding former Carolina Panthers wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin. The Bills in turn sent 2018 third- and seventh-round picks to Carolina.

ESPN first reported the trade, which was made minutes before Tuesday's 4 p.m. trade deadline. Both previously worked for the Panthers before being hired by Buffalo this past year. This year he had 475 receiving yards and two TDs.

The Bills will have a decision to make on Benjamin's contract for next season as he is owed a guaranteed $8.45-million but can be cut with no dead money.

Carolina selected Benjamin 28th overall in the 2014 NFL Draft. Entering this season rumors of weight issues surrounded the former Panther and just two weeks ago he left practice under his own accord. At the moment, Jordan Matthews is their leading wide receiver with just 15 catches for 193 yards on the year.

The move immediately improves the Buffalo passing game. That completed Florida State's ideal 14-0 season. Plus, with Greg Olsen still out, the Panthers need all the help they can get in the receiving game.

Devin Funchess would be Carolina's new No. 1 receiver and Russell Shepard and rookie Curtis Samuel are now expected to see increased playing time. They are still without Pro Bowl tight end Greg Olsen, who is now on injured reserve with a broken foot.
