SC pulls up West Bengal govt for filing plea against Aadhaar mandatory

SC: How can a state challenge a mandatory law asks SC to West Bengal Government

The court said this after Attorney General K.K. Venugopal told the bench that the government had filed a detailed affidavit refuting all the allegations on expanding the area under Aadhaar linkage.

Asking the court not to issue any further interim orders, Venugopal said the government had issued more than 100 orders and notifications to address the glitches in the implementation of Aadhaar.

The Centre, however, said that the deadline extension is valid only for those who do not have their Aadhaar numbers yet and were willing to get them. However, the final hearing in the main Aadhaar matter, is pending before the apex court. The existing deadline is up to December 31. But I will not link my mobile number with Aadhaar card.

The government has found these centres guilty of making faulty reports on dengue.

A Bench of Justices AK Sikri and Ashok Bhushan quizzed Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, who appeared for West Bengal, on how the state could resort to such a measure.

After the court's rap, the Bengal government has agreed to amend the plea and will file it again. "Let Mamta Banerjee come and file". Meanwhile, the court issued notice to the Centre on a separate plea filed by an individual challenging the linking of mobile phone numbers with Aadhaar. The court has asked the Centre to file its response on the plea in four weeks.
