National Rx take-back day: bring unused in, no questions asked

The day is to educate the public about the potential risk for prescription medication abuse and provide a safe and responsible method of disposal. The goal is to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially risky expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. "We are living an opioid crisis and the Take Back Day offers a great opportunity for proper disposal of unused and expired medications".

Pills and medicines in solid forms will be taken with no questions asked, said Derryle Smith, resident agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Agency in Gulfport. However no liquids, inhalers, patches, or syringes will be accepted at the sites.

To help combat the problem, the Department of Health and Human Services suggests parents speak to their children early and often about the dangers of prescription drug abuse.
