Hacker Steals Joint Strike Fighter Plans in Australia

The three months during which the hackers operated undetected has been dubbed'Alf's Mystery Happy Fun Time by the ASD

An Australian government agency official has admitted that 30GB of sensitive data about military planes and ships were stolen from a defence subcontractor. "One of the learning outcomes from this particular case study for at least the Australian government is that we need to find a way to start to be a little bit more granular in our contracting to mandate what type of security controls are required", Clarke said.

ASD incident response manager Mitchell Clarke told a conference in Sydney on Wednesday the hackers targeted a small "mum and dad type business" - an aerospace engineering company with about 50 employees in July a year ago.

He said the hacker has been nicknamed Alf, after a character in the Australian soap opera Home And Away.

Defence industry minister Christopher Pyne told the ABC on Thursday he does not know who the hacker is and indicated he would not tell if he knew, "It could be a state actor, a non-state actor".

A state actor has not been ruled out and it has been reported that a hacking tool, known as the Chinese Chopper, was used.

"It could be someone who was working for another company".

An aerospace engineering firm that subcontracts to the Australian Department of Defence was hacked into and restricted information on several advanced defence systems stolen in 2016.

"Given that hackers were able to roam the network long enough to siphon off 30GB of sensitive data, it highlights that there is a fundamental element of cyber-security missing".

"Analysis showed that the malicious actor gained access to the victim's network by exploiting an internet or public-facing server, which they accessed using administrative credentials", Tehan said.

Sensitive information about Australia's F-35 stealth fighter and other military hardware was stolen during a cyber-attack past year, it has emerged.

Europe warns Trump on ditching Iran nuclear deal
He should also call for an immediate partnership with Europe to address his biggest concerns with the nuclear agreement. Our outraged European allies would not capitulate, and would view the United States as a bully acting in bad faith.

Mr Clarke described the security breach as "sloppy admin".

As cyber security experts backed the minister's call, Mr Pyne deflected blame from the government, arguing ultimate responsibility lies with the company that was breached. The incident, Pyne concluded, was a "salutary reminder" about cyber security.

Dan Slattery, senior information security analyst at tech security firm Webroot, said that the report should worry both the public and private sectors.

"Fortunately, the data that was taken was commercial data, not military data, but it is still very serious and we will get to the bottom of it". On 22 March 2018, the event will come to the United States for the first time, taking place in one of the world's most prominent business cities: NY.
