Police said it was believed the auto mounted the pavement and collided with several pedestrians on Saturday afternoon, in one of London's busiest tourist areas.

Metropolitan Police said they were called to Exhibition Road near the Natural History Museum just after 2.20pm.

Police say a vehicle mounted the pavement - but none of the people injured have life-changing or life-threatening injuries. Officers are on scene, and the London Ambulance Service have been called.

Video footages from the site have floated on social media which showed a man held down on the ground by the police following the accident.

The suspect, identified as a 52-year-old British man named Khalid Masood, also stabbed an unarmed police officer. The injuries were mainly head and leg-related, it added, and were not life-threatening.

The Natural History Museum tweeted there had been a "serious incident outside the Museum".

Police are labeling it an "incident" and said they will release more information "when we can".

One witness, who gave his name only as Leonard, told AFP: "I was near South Ken station and there were many police".

Downing Street said the Prime Minister was being kept up-to-date on developments.

Massive crowds of families with young children were seen evacuating museums along Exhibition Road following the incident, as authorities cordoned off the area.

Nine people were taken to area hospitals, officials told the BBC.

Several people have been injured in the incident, Scotland Yard say.
