NASA astronauts to venture outside ISS for October's first spacewalk today

Michigan Students to Speak with NASA Astronauts on Space Station

The first of the three spacewalks is being carried out by Expedition 53 Commander Randy Bresnik and Flight Engineer Mark Vande Hei, both NASA astronauts.

"Two NASA astronauts switched their spacesuits to battery power this morning at 8:05 a.m. EDT aboard the International Space Station to begin a spacewalk planned to last about 6.5 hours", NASA announced.

Bresnik and Vande Hei will venture back outside October 10 while Joe Acaba will join the station commander for the October 18 excursion.

Saudi Aramco plans expansion in India with new unit
King Salman's visit to Russian Federation has been widely interpreted as a sign of Russia's growing influence in the Middle East. Experts believe, however, that the alliance between Moscow and Riyadh may change the current situation on the world oil market.

In this frame from a computer animation, Bresnik and Vande Hei are shown working to replace the grappling mechanism on one end of the space station's robot arm that has experienced age-related problems.

Canadarm2 riding the Mobile Base System along the Mobile Transporter railway, running the length of the station's main truss. For the third spacewalk, Acaba will join Bresnik instead. It's two Latching End Effectors, or LEEs, have been worsening.

A few moments later, Vande Hei, making his first spacewalk, made his way outside. The LEEs, located at either end of the arm, also provide other crucial data through complex electronics, camera and sensors, NASA officials said, but the arm was launched over 15 years ago and is in need of fix.

Spanish king slams Catalan independence movement as protests escalate
Spain's monarch doesn't traditionally get involved in daily politics and typically only addresses the nation around Christmas. But a consensus on the vote, even among Catalans, was by no means assured, despite Puigdemont's stated determination.

The arm can also move like an inchworm across the space station by grabbing onto special fixtures. Initially, NASA planned to fix the LEE which seemed most degraded, but the other one stopped working, which moved it to the top of the priority list.

The spacewalk will be the first out of their three planned for October that having the aim to get the Canadian robotic arm in good shape for doing effective work outside the ISS. But then in August, the latches on the other LEE stalled during one of the arm's robotic maneuvers, so NASA decided that one was a higher priority to replace first.

In the near term, two more spacewalks are planned October 10 and 18 to lubricate the newly attached LEE-A fitting, to replace two cameras with degraded color and to carry out other routine maintenance.

Before lunch on day four, Pakistan was trailing the Sri Lankan first innings total of 419 by 79 runs with two wickets intact. After four days of tiresome cricket, this match saw a frenetic fifth day when 15 wickets fell for just 183 runs.

Vande Hei and Bresnik plan to step out on another spacewalk Oct 10, with the third set for Oct 18. A spare LEE is located along the side of the station's truss.
