Lawmakers target Equifax over $7M IRS contract

"I'm truly and deeply sorry for what happened", Smith said at the start of his testimony to a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee. "They are my friends, my family, members of my church, the members of my community, my neighbors", Smith said.

One of three main credit reporting agencies in the US next to Experian and TransUnion, Equifax stores a trove of highly sensitive personal and financial details about consumers.

But he also sought to play down the severity of the problems that had led to the breach, defended the company's response to the crisis and deflected questions about how far Equifax would go to compensate consumers who were financially harmed.

Chelsea star Morata to skip Champions League clashes against Roma
Morata was forced off in the 35th minute of Chelsea's defeat to Manchester City with an injury to his left hamstring. Morata's injury is a blow but with the worldwide break scheduled, it has come at the best possible time for Chelsea .

Equifax says the review also determined that some Canadians had their credit card information hacked and will be mailing out written notices to all potentially impacted Canadians, but did not provide a specific estimate. Smith's trip to Capitol Hill continues Wednesday with appearances before the Senate Banking and Judiciary committees.

While speaking to the committee (video below), former CEO Richard Smith outlined the company's normal procedure for new patches: Have a technician install it and then scan the system for any remaining vulnerabilities. The company said it would update the database with the names of the additional millions of potentially affected consumers by October 8. Companies should be required to tell people when hacks happen, be held to security standards with penalties to back them up, and cover costs when its customers who pay.

Some Congressional committee members said it should spur stronger data protection laws and prompt the U.S. to rethink the role of credit agencies. As if this wasn't enough, the Justice Department has opened an investigation into Equifax over concerns about insider trading after three executives unloaded millions of dollars worth of stock and options right before the data breach was made public. He said hearings before four House and Senate panels this week should run their course before lawmakers make a decision about what to do next.

Equifax data breach: 2 steps to protect your money & identity!

A Texas Republican, Joe Barton, suggested that companies that allow people's sensitive information to be exposed by a hack should face a fine for each person whose data is stolen. Consumers don't have the ability to remove their information from Equifax's databases because it's furnished by banks and telecommunications companies.

Eschoo also wanted to bring in former Chief Information Officer Dave Webb, who also retired from Equifax last month, saying, "I don't think that this is resolved".

Thereafter, only a fine save from Brighton keeper Matt Ryan prevented Aaron Ramsey doubling their lead just before the interval. Sead Kolasinac went close to scoring a third goal , but March managed to clear his header off the line in the nick of time.

Smith said he would like companies and government agencies to "begin a dialogue" about replacing Social Security numbers as a key verifier.
