Facebook and Google promoted fake news in wake of Las Vegas shooting

US online giants Google Facebook and Twitter pledged to do more to filter out misinformation after false reports circulated on the Las Vegas mass shooting

The Las Vegas incident claimed the lives of at least 59 people, injuring hundreds more, according to various media reports.

While some fake news tagged the shooter as a left-wing, anti-Trump activist, law enforcement officials have identified 64-year-old Stephen Paddock as the man behind the disgusting attack.

Twitter said it too was stepping up efforts to weed out false reports on the shooting.

Fake victims. Fake shooters.

The false reports named Geary Danley, an apparent progressive with a Facebook friend whose name matched that of a woman police had identified as a person of interest in the early hours of the shooting investigation.

You had to like Webb's chances considering in three career games against the Gators, Webb had rushed for 311 yards on 62 carries. If that looks familiar, it's a lot like the game-winning throw he connected with Cleveland with to vanquish Tennessee.

The companies on Monday issued statements blaming the results on algorithmic miscalculations - the result of companies moving away from human moderators to rely on machines and artificial intelligence.

The automation of editorial judgment, combined with tech companies' reluctance to appear partisan, has created a lopsided battle between those who want to spread misinformation and those tasked with policing it. Posting a malicious rumor on Facebook, or writing a false news story that is indexed by Google, is a almost instantaneous process; removing such posts often requires human intervention. "However, its removal was delayed by a few minutes, allowing it to be screen captured and circulated online", Facebook told Fast Company on Monday in response to the hoax and spam websites showing up.

"We are working to resolve the problem that has allowed this to happen and deeply regret the confusion this has caused", added the largest social network in the world.

After that the american media have noted that the section of 4chan, was proposed among the search results, Facebook, Twitter, and Google have all indicated that they have taken steps to depart from it. The sites and the notoriously anarchic and conspiracy-theory-laden image board community were sharing "breaking news" where they had wrongly identified the terrorist and shared other misinformation.

Thereafter, only a fine save from Brighton keeper Matt Ryan prevented Aaron Ramsey doubling their lead just before the interval. Sead Kolasinac went close to scoring a third goal , but March managed to clear his header off the line in the nick of time.

Google, in a statement to news outlets, acknowledged that it had been "briefly surfacing an inaccurate 4chan website in our Search results for a small number of queries". In addition, some users saw a story on a "trending topic" page on Facebook for the shooting that was published by Sputnik, a news agency controlled by the Russian government.

According to Google, 15 percent of the searches users see every day are new.

Among those falsely stated to be missing in Las Vegas were a German pro-soccer player, a murder suspect from Mexico and a male porn star - whose pictures were taken from the Internet. "We, as a company, should not be the arbiter of truth".

"We are aware of this issue and are proactively taking action on content that violates our terms of service", a Twitter spokesman said.
