Massive operation to get Monarch passengers back after Airline goes bust

Regulator the Civil Aviation Authority can deny an airline permission to do business if it believes it does not have enough cash to keep going

Monarch airline went into administration after the CAA rejected to renew its Air Travel Organiser's Licence.

A Luton Airport spokesman said: "We are saddened by this morning's announcement that Monarch airlines has ceased trading with immediate effect".

The government has launched its biggest ever peacetime repatriation operation to fly the stranded passengers back to the United Kingdom at no cost to them. Customers are affected in Spain, Gibraltar, Croatia, Greece, Cyprus, France, Italy, Sweden, Turkey, Israel and Portugal. They will not have to pay anything.

"This is an unprecedented response to an unprecedented situation".

"We always fly with Monarch, a couple of times a year and I am gutted it's folded as I have always found them to be a fantastic airline to fly with".

The government's "extraordinary operation" to bring customers home - to include chartering more than 30 aircraft - was Britain's " biggest ever peacetime repatriation", Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said, according to PA.
