Natural quake detected near NK's nuke test site: S. Korean agency

North Korea Trump United Nations

South Korea's Yonhap news agency reports that Ri told reporters in NY that a response "could be the most powerful detonation of an H-bomb in the Pacific".

North Korea in past months has been stepping up the aggressiveness of its nuclear and missile tests.

"The quake has been analyzed to have occurred naturally", an agency official said. But the South Korean weather agency official said the analysis of seismic waves and the lack of sound waves clearly showed that the quake wasn't caused by an artificial explosion. Like China, North Korea is not a signatory to the 1963 Partial Nuclear Test Ban (PNTB) Treaty.

After claiming four million lives, the Korean War was halted on July 27, 1953 when military leaders from the United States, North Korea and China signed the Armistice Agreement.

China's quake administration said it was a magnitude 3.4 natural disaster and cited a "suspected explosion".

President Donald Trump added economic action to his fiery military threats against North Korea on Thursday, authorizing stiffer new sanctions in response to the Koreans' nuclear weapons advances.

"It should be taken seriously", DiMaggio said, adding that a hydrogen bomb test over the Pacific could be "setting up a risky situation - a potential stumbling toward war".

This image captured from the website of South Korea's weather agency September 23, 2017, shows the location of the 3.2 magnitude quake that occurred in North Korea earlier in the day.

North Korea threatened early Friday to detonate a hydrogen bomb over the Pacific Ocean in what the nation called the "highest level of hardline countermeasure in history".

The President's priority heading to NY was to light a fire under global efforts to further isolate and punish North Korea, following a volley of missile tests and its most powerful nuclear blast.

The weapons are being tested at a torrid pace and include solidfuel missiles that have been created to be launched from road-mobile launchers or submarines and are thus less detectable.

There has been a widening linguistic divide between the rival Koreas, but "neukdari" has the same meaning in North Korea as in the South, according to a South Korean organization involved in a now-stalled project to produce a joint dictionary.

Later in the KCNA translation of Kim's address, the North Korean leader advises Trump to "exercise prudence in selecting words", CNN reported.

North Korea has launched in what it says are tests of several missiles, some of which are believed to be able to strike the United States. Let's hope that's what we get at most out of it, too. It is not yet clear if the USA is yet ready to actually impose widespread sanctions against Chinese entities that deal with North Korea, a move that could trigger a significant political backlash in Beijing.

Earlier on Saturday, China said it will limit exports of refined petroleum products from October 1 and ban exports of condensates and liquefied natural gas immediately to comply with the latest United Nations sanctions.
