Sensex down 200 points in early trade Nifty slips below 10,100-mark

In Asia, stocks fell while safe havens suc as the Japanese yen and Swiss franc gained amidst possibility of North Korea conducting another hydrogen bomb test.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had said earlier that the government was looking for ways to lift economic growth, which slipped to a three-year low of 5.7 per cent in the quarter to end-June.

The rupee - which plummeted by a whopping 53 paise to end at 64.80 a dollar on Thursday - dropped by 31 paise to a four-month low level of 65.12 intra-day trading against the United States dollar before closing at 64.79/80 on Friday amid frenetic dollar demand from importers and banks.

The Nifty started the week at 10,133.10 and marked new life highs at 10,178.95 and a low of 9,952.80. The Nikkei 225 index lost 0.25 percent, or 51.03 points, to close at 20,296.45, while the broader Topix index also ended down 0.25 percent, or 4.13 points, at 1,664.61.

The second line shares of midcap and smallcap companies also witnessed substantial selling. The S&P BSE Small-Cap index fell 394.73 points or 2.37 percent to settle at 16,293.03.

In terms of investments, provisional data with the exchanges showed that foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold scrips worth Rs 1,241.73 crore while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) purchased stocks worth Rs 521.17 crore.

Among BSE sectoral indices, metal index plunged 2.07 per cent, followed by oil & gas 1.63 per cent, PSU 1.63 and realty 1.58 per cent.

On the 30-stock Sensex, Tata Motors (1.44 percent), Cipla (0.94 percent) and Sun Pharma (0.66 percent) were the top gainers. BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices were down 1.59 per cent and 1.66 per cent, respectively around 1.06 pm (IST).
