After the first video was sent from Sharath's mobile phone to his family through WhatsApp on September 12 - the day of the kidnapping - Vishal, who was known to the family, called Sharath's sister on the pretext of enquiring about the incident. The kidnappers killed Sharath after they found out that his father had filed a police complaint. Sharath Kumar was kidnapped in a sedan and was thereafter kept hostage in the vehicle, said police. However, as the body started floating, the kidnappers tried to sink it by attaching stones to it before they buried it near the lake in a jute bag.

Initial reports claim that the young boy was kidnapped by one of his relatives whose name is Vishal who is also arrested. In the video, Sharath stated that he had been kidnapped by some persons who looked like terrorists and were demanding a ransom of Rs 50 lakh from his parents, said police. The 19-year-old's father, Niranjan Kumar, is a senior Income Tax official.

Deputy commissioner of police (north sub-division) Chetan Singh Rathore said five people had been identified as the perpetrators, including Sharath's friend HP Vishal, 20.
