Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg vows to combat election interference

Twitter to Meet With Senate Committee on Russia Election Interference

Facebook has already handed over copies of the ads and information about the relevant accounts to Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is conducting an investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

"It has always been against our policies to use any of our tools in a way that break the law", Zuckerberg said.

Zuckerberg said Facebook will more than double the team working on election integrity, without revealing how many staffers that now does or would eventually entail.

Describing this third step as the most important one Facebook is taking, Zuckerberg outlined a plan for bringing its political ads to "an even higher standard of transparency" than political ads in other media.

The platform with 2 billion users announced earlier this month that pages linked to the former Soviet Union spent $50,000 buying political ads on issues such as immigration and gun rights. "And the limited information Congress and the intelligence community have shared with us to date suggests that efforts to compromise the 2016 election were varied and sophisticated - and that understanding those efforts requires a united effort, from across the technology, intelligence and political communities".

"We support Congress in deciding how to best use this information to inform the public, and we expect the government to publish its findings when their investigation is complete", Zuckerberg wrote. Zuckerberg may be unable to release the ads but Congress should do so.

"I wish I could tell you that we are going to be able to stop all interference. We don't check what people say before they say it, and frankly, I don't think our society shouldn't want us to", said Zuckerberg.

Mark Zuckerberg has pledged to make Facebook advertisements more transparent after acknowledging that groups linked to Russian Federation tried to use his website to influence the election.

Over 40,000 of those Rohingyas, who fled Myanmar, have entered India illegally , according to government's estimate. The Myanmar government denies the term and refers to them as Bengalis, illegal immigrants from Bangladesh .

Facebook is also increasing its investment in security - specifically in election integrity.

At Twitter, meanwhile, executives from its Washington DC office will appear before the Senate committee investigating Russian interference in the election.

In a statement posted to Facebook's site, company General Counsel, Colin Stretch, announced the reversal of the company's initial decision not to share the ads.

Zuckerberg made a bold promise to create more services to protect Facebook users while they engaging in political discourse.
