President Trump condemns UN's 'bureaucracy and mismanagement'

North Korea

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday called for a change of bureaucracy in the United Nations.

But Trump has also voiced concerns that the U.N. and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation have relied too heavily on the United States and that other members should shoulder more of the economic and leadership burdens.

More recently, Trump praised a pair of unanimous council votes to tighten sanctions on North Korea over its continued nuclear weapons and ballistic missile tests.

Current tensions with North Korea are expected to be a huge point of discussion during Trump's United Nations visit as the administration is increasingly showing signs that it wants to take military action against the Hermit Kingdom.

Also on Thursday, Trump will be holding talks with Japanese and South Korean leaders who have backed the United States drive to ratchet up sanctions on North Korea. Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) predicted based on her discussions with the president that Trump's administration could lead to a new era of bipartisanship. That's what makes this such a perilous moment.

Trump's first appearance before the organization is at a US -sponsored event on reforming the 193-member organization.

Haley: 'Plenty' of military options available for dealing with North Korea
That launch came less than two weeks after Pyongyang staged its most powerful nuclear test yet. Trump has threatened "fire and fury" in response to North Korea's threats.

Trump adds that the United Nations. "If nations meet these challenges, vast opportunity lies before us", said White House National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, providing a preview for reporters late last week.

"I actually saw great potential right across the street to be honest with you, and it was only for the reason that the United Nations was here that that turned out to be such a successful project", Trump joked.

"The US is still the top dog at the United Nations, but there is a lot of talk about China replacing it as a leader on issues like climate change", Mr Gowan said.

But Mrs. Haley said Sunday that the crisis with Pyongyang may no longer be in the hands of the Security Council despite a series of increasingly tougher economic sanctions. While seated next to Netanyahu, a vociferous critic of the Iran nuclear deal, Trump declared "you'll see very soon" when asked if the USA would stay in the agreement.

He also suggested that the USA was paying more than its fair share to keep the New York-based world body operational.

The president also meets separately Monday with the leaders of Israel and France, and hosts Latin American leaders for dinner.

US Special Envoy: Kurdish Referendum Could Undermine Fight Against IS
He did not disclose details of the plan, but said the discussion with the Kurdish leaders was "positive and constructive". Like Spain's, the central government of Iraq is determined to prevent an independence vote for its largest majority.

Candidate Trump railed against the U.N. Now, his White House wants to work with its members on North Korea.

Mr Trump's senior economic adviser, Gary Cohn, reaffirmed USA plans to abandon the Paris climate change deal unless Washington gets a better deal, despite Mr Trump hinting he might change his position.

Trump's White House has delegated authorities to USA military commanders in the field and given the Pentagon broader powers to make decisions, which he says has bolstered the campaign against ISIS.

"And so there is going to be a chorus of voices both from Asia and beyond arguing that we still have to give talks a chance", he said of the NY gathering.

The lawmaker said Republican disagreements over how to handle things like Obamacare and tax reform are creating huge opportunities for Democrats.

President Donald Trump is meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and says they "are giving it an absolute go'" in Middle East peace talks.
