Boeing walked away from talks with Trudeau government: ambassador

The dispute has drawn in other U.S. allies, with UK Prime Minister Theresa May raising the issue during a phone call with Trump last week, seeking to safeguard thousands of jobs at a Bombardier factory in northern Ireland.

After their hand-in-hand stroll around the White House the pair appears to have cemented the "special relationship" - and May is relying on it.

Unifor National President Jerry Dias is meeting this afternoon with Boeing officials to discuss its trade complaint involving Bombardier's C Series planes.

David MacNaughton, Canada's Ambassador to Washington, told reporters Tuesday that Boeing had walked away from talks with his government over the issue and that he has now raised it with U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.

American aircraft manufacturer Boeing has accused rival Bombardier of receiving unfair state support and a ruling in the U.S. this month could doom its Belfast factory.

The ongoing controversy surrounding the bitter dispute between plane makers Bombardier and Boeing took an unlikely turn on Wednesday as it emerged that DUP leader Arlene Foster and Michelle O'Neill, the head of Sinn Fein in the province, had joined forces in a bid to raise the pressure on the the United States government over the issue. May relies on DUP's backing to maintain a majority in parliament after the Conservative Party failed to maintain all its seats in June's snap general election.

Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has branded the law suit "unfair and aggressive" amid fears it is inspired by Mr Trump's "America First" rhetoric.

Some commentators have argued Boeing has taken the action on the basis of his inward looking vision for the States.

In April, Boeing asked the U.S. Commerce Department to investigate alleged subsidies and unfair pricing for Bombardier's CSeries airplane, accusing the Canadian company of having sold 75 of the planes to Delta Air Lines Inc previous year at a price well below cost.

The United States Department of Commerce has been investigating Boeing's allegations and is due to make a decision on October 4th.

Senator Kenny said Canada had "made it clear to Boeing" that it was unhappy with the aerospace firm, and said the Canadian government is now reviewing all of its purchases from Boeing.

"For me, having that kind of support is important because it speaks to sort of the heart of the issue, which is jobs, innovation and worldwide supply chains", Cromer said.

"All we've said to Secretary Ross is that we would like to continue discussions, because we don't understand why they would be taking action on a case where [Boeing] wasn't even competing for the business".

"This is the normal course of action for addressing instances where a competitor is selling into the USA market below cost, and we will let the process play out", it added.
