Mexico Intensifies Recovery Efforts After Earthquake and Hurricane

Family members grieve over the coffin containing the remains of 64-year-old Reynalda Matus during a wake in Juchitan Oaxaca state

Scientists are studying how this latest quake happened.

The quake occurred near the point of collision between three tectonic plates, the Cocos, the Caribbean and the North American. She adds that "you get stresses on the seafloor and we know that can produce big earthquakes". The death toll from the quake has already reached 61, a number that will unfortunately but surely rise.

A monster 8.2 magnitude quake brought an unusual phenomenon that lit up the sky as it hit Mexico's coast, killing at least 60 people.

At least one other person was killed in Guatemala, its president has said. Two others died in the Gulf coast state of Tabasco.

The official added that the storm had left some 70,000 people without electricity and caused damage in 53 of the Gulf state's 212 municipalities, Reuters reports.

Mexico's seismology service measured Thursday's quake at magnitude 8.2. No further details have been provided.

Washington: We will focus on delivering humanitarian aid to Burma's Rakhine province
Burning Rohingya homes can make it less likely that they return. It also asked humanitarian organisations to resume their work. Some 146,000 Rohingya have fled since then.

Since the 1985 quake, Mexican authorities have instituted a stricter building code and developed an alert system using sensors placed on the coasts. At least five deaths have been confirmed in Mexico, with the death toll expected to rise.

"It's 71 (dead). Just for Oaxaca", said Jesus Gonzalez, a spokesperson for the state civil protection authority.

Teams found bodies in the rubble, but the highlight was pulling four people, including two children, alive from the completely collapsed Hotel Del Rio, where one woman died.

President Peña Nieto's office said he would travel to Chiapas to survey the damage.

Rescuers pulled bodies from the rubble and grieving families carried coffins through the streets Saturday after Mexico's biggest natural disaster in a century killed 65 people, while elsewhere two died in mudslides unleashed by storm Katia.

The powerful 8.1 tremor that hit the southern states of Chiapas, Tabasco and Oaxaca registered 8.2 on the Richter scale, damaging buildings and created fear of Tsunami. Strong aftershocks continue to rattle the town, including a magnitude 5.2 jolt in the early morning.

Gov. Manuel Velasco told Milenio TV that the deaths occurred in San Cristobal de las Casas. "Homes, schools and hospitals have been affected".

Government cargo planes arrived in Juchitan to deliver supplies while the military began distributing boxes of food to residents.

The epicenter of the quake, which hit late Thursday, was in the Pacific Ocean, about 100 kilometers off the town of Tonala in Chiapas.

Some people have continued to sleep outside, fearful of more collapses.
