White House promises massive military response to latest North Korea threat

South Korea's Meteorological Administration shows seismic activity from North Korea following the test

Trump called North Korea's nuclear test, its biggest to date, "very hostile and unsafe to the United States" and said his administration was considering sweeping new economic sanctions to pressure China and every other country that trades with North Korea.

Pyongyang's test Sunday of what is thought to be its most powerful nuclear weapon doesn't change that fact, experts say. Their words and actions continue to be very hostile and unsafe to the United States.

Trump also earlier said over social media that the USA was mulling ceasing trade with countries that did business with North Korea, a move that would halt commerce with China and numerous other major trade partners. In a series of tweets, Trump warned about North Korea becoming "very hostile" and "a great threat", and he urged its neighboring nations, China and South Korea, to take action. But he said the U.S. was "not looking for the total annihilation of a country", though it "had many options to do so".

"We are not looking to the total annihilation of a country, namely North Korea". This action followed threats of an attack on the waters near the USA island territory of Guam which prompted a strong reaction from President Trump.

However, the Chinese spokesman said military force should not be an option.

He later added his administration is considering halting all trade with countries doing business with North Korea.

It comes after Kim Jong-un claimed to have had "perfect success" in testing a hydrogen bomb, which would be small enough to fit on a ballistic missile whilst also being vastly more destructive than an atomic bomb.
