Denis Shapolova's US Open adventure ends with defeat to Pablo Carreno Busta

Denis Shapovalov of Canada wipes his face during his match against Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain during the fourth round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament Sunday Sept. 3 2017 in New York

Shapovalov, 18, was attempting to become the youngest player to reach the quarter-finals at the US Open since Andre Agassi in 1988.

Still struggling to find his stroke, Shapovalov turned to the crowd and shouted with joy after an overhand smash cut Carreno Busta's lead to 5-4 and give the young Canadian serve.

Throughout the set, the Canadian curled his slider serve out wide on the ad side repeatedly tormenting Carreno Busta, who failed to move left and cover it. Shapovalov whipped the wide serve effectively backing up the break in the seventh game.

Spanish, 12th-seeded of the competition, won 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3). After going 0-40 down Carreno Busta saved the first two break points, the second of them with an inside-out forehand victor at the end of a pulsating 21-stroke rally, before Shapovalov converted the third with a smash.

Shapovalov was up a break in the first and third set, but both times Carreno Busta broke back and went on to force the tie breakers.

"It's wonderful", Carreno Busta said in his on-court post-match interview with ESPN's Darren Cahill. "I can't describe it". Every point was important for me. You never know when your opponent will doubt a little bit or make a mistake. "I just tried to focus and continue".

"I think I had a lot of chances", said Shapovalov.

"We don't know whether Milos will be able to play, and we probably won't know until the final week or so", Tennis Alberta president Elizabeth Huculak told the Edmonton Sun.

"In the tie-breaks, I just played ideal". "He stayed very tough mentally on the big points". He had to play three rounds before making the main draw. The lower half of the Men's Draw is deplete of many top seeds while the first and third seeds march on for a possible semifinal clash. It really has a special place in my heart, and, you know, now NY for sure, it will always have a special place for me.
