Britain's PM Theresa May visits Japan with eye on Brexit fears

Theresa May flies into North Korean warzone as defiant UK hits back

Theresa May's announcement that she plans to serve as Prime Minister for "the long term" has come as rather a surprise to her party.

"But also going out around the world ensuring that we can do those trade deals that bring prosperity to our economy and bring jobs to the United Kingdom".

Speaking during the first of three days in Japan, the Prime Minister said that she was "not a quitter" and that she would be making efforts to "get the Brexit deal right" and "deliver the right deal for the people of the United Kingdom".

Also, despite several leading Conservatives thought to be eyeing her job, none appears willing to step in now when Britain is engaged in hard talks to leave the European Union, which officials say are making little or no progress.

In fact, Viktor Ozerov, the head of defence committee had told Interfax : "I think this information is close to 100 per cent". The coalition said in a statement that during July, it had investigated 37 reports of civilian casualties.

On BBC Radio 4's Today programme, former party chairman Grant Shapps likened May's interview to Margaret Thatcher's pledge to "go on and on" - three years before she left Number 10.

It's clear the Japanese PM sees Brexit as a damage limitation exercise - and as it happens that is what's going on in the Conservative Party right now following Mrs May disastrous snap election.

The veteran party member, who discussed May's prospects on condition of anonymity, said he thought May was honest in pledging to stay on until the next election, despite the chorus of calls from foes within the party for her to step aside. "Let's get some progress for the British people first; I think that's the priority".

While Shapps said there were frustrations in the party with May, he conceded that there was little appetite for another leadership change among Conservatives.

"In response to this illegal action, Prime Minister [Shinzo] Abe and I had agreed to work together and with others in the global community to strengthen pressure against North Korea including by increasing the pace of sanctions".

Labour said she was "deluding herself" - but Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson led her defence, insisting she could win an absolute majority. "We have got to think about how we renew our franchise".

William Hague has blamed the British public for making "a mistake" at the general election, by failing to return a Conservative majority and weakening the country's hands in the Brexit negotiations with the EU.

Talks devolved this week into a brawl over how much Britain should pay to leave the European Union, an issue that must be settled before the parties discuss their future relationship.
