Research tells us why yawning is so contagious

Seagull yawn

Just thinking about yawning makes us yawn, and now scientists think they've figured out why yawning is so contagious.

In other words, "the "urge" to yawn is increased by trying to stop yourself from doing so", senior study author Georgina Jackson, a professor of cognitive neuropsychology at the University of Nottingham, said in a press statement published by the varsity.

The 36 participants were asked to view video clips of other people yawning and were instructed to resist yawning or allow themselves to yawn; the number of their yawns, stifled yawns as well as the intensity of their apparent urge to yawn were continuously recorded in a video. Indeed, when the researchers applied electrical currents to the area, the urge to yawn increased.

Hurricane Harvey disaster relief telethon continues
If people are interested in getting involved to help with future disasters, the first step is to register and start training. She also said the Red Cross is using lessons learned from Haiti as it deals with responding to Harvey and other disasters.

The participants were videoed throughout, and their yawns and stifled yawns were counted. Together, these findings demonstrate that the instruction to resist yawning significantly increases the urge to yawn and alters how the yawn may be expressed (i.e., stifled yawns rather than full yawns), but it does not alter the individual's propensity for yawning. As the researchers used TMS, it was also possible to increase the "excitability" in the motor cortex and thus even increase people's tendency to contagious yawns. This is a common form of echophenomenon, which is a fancy word for automatically mimicking another person's actions or words. "Studying contagious yawning helps us to understand the brain mechanisms that give rise to tics". They focused on the motor cortex, since it's involved in planning and movement. They observed that the excitability of a part of the brain, the motor cortex, was related to the sensitivity of the yawn, which is contagious.

Stephen Jackson, professor of cognitive neuroscience in the School of Psychology, led the multidisciplinary study.

Sharing findings of the study, he said, "We suggest that these findings may be particularly important in understanding further the association between motor excitability and the occurrence of echophenomena in a wide range of clinical conditions..."

MS Dhoni reaches 300 ODIs: Watch his best ODI innings
The umpire called it a wide, but India reviewed the decision on Dhoni's insistence, and came away with the wicket . Kohli looked aggressive throughout his innings as he scored 131 runs from just 96 balls.

"We are looking for potential non-drug, personalized treatments, using TMS that might be effective in modulating imbalances in the brain networks", he said. And when the participants were told to resist yawning, the urge to yawn went up. Though, trying to see how many people you can get in on the yawn plague is also a fun way to start your day. It is something you know you have to do even if you don't want to at that time.

The neural basis for echophenomena is unknown.

Regardless of the cause, it's probably a safe bet that you're yawning right now.
