Burning Man Wildfire Blocks Road, Threatens Annual Festival

Burning Man organizers say they aren't now affected by a nearby Nevada wildfire as the counter-culture festival prepares to culminate Saturday night with the burning of a towering effigy.

Aaron Joel Mitchell, 41, broke through two levels of security Saturday night to run into the flaming namesake effigy, a statement from the Pershing County Sheriff's Office said. He was treated on-site and later transported to UC Davis Hospital where he died.

In a great conflagration, the sacrificial wooden man atop his monumental spacecraft are offered to up the gods.

Around 70,000 revelers had gathered to witness the burning of a giant effigy when the man broke through, evaded security, and ran directly into the flames suffering bad burns.
