South African president to face parliamentary no confidence vote

President of South Africa Jacob Zuma faces a no confidence vote

Zuma's nine lives pay off Zuma is celebrating after narrowly surviving his eighth no-confidence vote.

"Members of the ANC and the opposition stood together to say Zuma must go".

Zuma's African National Congress party dominates the legislature, holding 249 of the 400 seats.

Opposition parties and the Future South Africa coalition of social, religious and community organisations have vowed to intensify their battle to get Zuma recalled by the ANC.

Rumours stated it was Bale who was deemed expendable but maybe Ronaldo is more likely to make the switch to Manchester United. I never look at it in terms of taking on my former club, not at all. "It's something I've been through many times".

In 2005, he was charged with corruption over a multi-billion dollar arms deal from 1999 but the charges were dropped after he became President. Its leader's popularity among South African voters is at an all-time low because of the perception that he is corrupt and unable to inspire the kind of leadership that would kick-start the country's ailing economy.

Zuma, 75, has been at the centre of controversy for years. The main candidates appear to be Cyril Ramaphosa, who is now deputy president and is seen as the more pro-business candidate, and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, who is in President Zuma's ex-wife and is in Mr. Zuma's more populist camp.

Since Tuesday morning, thousands of opposition supporters had protested amidst heavy police presence in front of parliament in Cape Town, where the vote was held, demanding parliamentarians to vote "with their conscience" and remove Zuma from office.

The ANC had its worst showing previous year in municipal elections as Zuma faced allegations of corruption.

But the opposition hopes some ANC MPs will side with them as the vote is secret for the first time. "They must use their vote... to remove Jacob Zuma", the main opposition Democratic Alliance party said after the speaker of parliament made a surprise decision Monday to hold the ballot in secret.

President Jacob Zuma has survived another motion of no confidence with 198 MPs voting against the motion, while only 177 supported the motion.

Others said that the secret ballot might incentivise members of the president's party to vote against him. South Africa faces a choice between corruption and a prosperous South Africa.

ANC leaders who spoke against the motion, including Defense Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa, accused the opposition parties of seeking "regime change" by voting Zuma out of office. Peter Granitz reports from the capital, Pretoria, that while Zuma stays on as president, he has lost the support of some members of his party.
