Minnesota governor calls mosque bombing 'act of terrorism'

Minnesota mosque bombed during morning prayers

"It's an act of terrorism, a criminal act of terrorism", the governor, Mark Dayton, said Sunday (Aug 6) during a visit to the mosque, Dar Al-Farooq, in Bloomington. "In Minnesota", he said, "we accept one another, we support one another and we respect one another".

No one was injured in Saturday's attack at 0500 local time (0900 GMT), but the imam's office was heavily damaged.

"What a bad, dastardly, cowardly, awful act this was", he said.

North Korea frees imprisoned Canadian pastor
The American, 23, was released from Pyongyang prison and sent to the U.S. with "food poisoning" but soon died. His supporters have said he was on a humanitarian mission to North Korea when he was detained.

Asad Zaman, director of the local Muslim-American Society, condemned what he called "an arson attack" and said his organization will offer a $10,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest or conviction.

"We invite the President to come and see", Omar said. "He seems to want to tweet about security and terror issues", he said.

On Sunday and Monday, Trump instead tweeted about sanctions against North Korea, railed against "fake news" and the "failing" New York Times, and questioned Senator Richard Blumenthal's service record in Vietnam.

"While it is fortunate that no lives were lost, and the physical damage is reparable, the Federal Bureau of Investigation recognizes the pain and anger of our communities anytime a place of worship is attacked and we will work hard to hold those responsible accountable", Thornton said in a statement, which described the "crime" as "our top priority".

But he didn't comment on a Minnesota mosque bombing that occurred over the weekend. The blast killed no one as worshippers prepared for their morning prayers but it caused damage to the imam's office.

Mohamed Omar, the mosque's executive director, told reporters in Bloomington that a member of the congregation saw a pickup truck speeding away from the building's parking lot just after the blast. According to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, discrimination against Muslims has gone up during the 2016 campaign and has continued to rise after Donald's Trump election. In the past, the White House has said the president is simply not able to address every incident. Mr. Ellison said Mr. Gorka is "trying with no evidence whatsoever to distract the public's attention from the real story: that a group of Americans who were peacefully worshipping were the target of a terrorist act".

Trump touts his base as 'getting stronger,' though polls show a weakening
By one account Trump has spent almost 25 per cent of his time in office outside Washington, typically on one of his properties. Writing on Twitter he said: "The Trump base is far bigger and stronger than ever before despite some phony Fake News polling".

That said, even if Trump's indifference toward hate crimes against ethnic and religious minorities has become the norm, it shouldn't be.
