"For almost three decades, we've strived to make hospital quality more transparent to healthcare consumers nationwide", said Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News.

The medical center also performed well in a number of specialty rankings, securing a Top 50 placement in five specialties.

Mayo Clinic finished with 415 points, which is 50 points higher than Cleveland Clinic which was second. In the 16 specialty areas, 146 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty.

"This is the first time our programs at UK in neuro (neurology and neurosurgery) have achieved national rankings", said Dr. Larry B. Goldstein, the Ruth L. Works Professor and chair of the UK Department of Neurology, and co-director of the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute (KNI).

"It allows not only our patients but also our physicians and staff to be seamlessly in touch with the best medical knowledge, technology and expert care available in the world on a daily basis", he said.

This is the second straight year Mayo Clinic has earned the top honor, after finishing second to Massachusetts General Hospital in 2015. Florida hospital rose up two ranks from sixth place and ORMC rose up from 11th place.

A year ago, Mayo tied for the distinction of top hospital in Florida with UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville.

St. Augustine's Flagler Hospital, which tied for 16th in the state, is the third ranked hospital in Northeast Florida. The "America's Best Hospitals" rankings are accessible online at www.usnews.com/besthospitals and the publication's print edition is scheduled to hit newsstands later this month.
