And subsequently, following a hearing last month, a suspension was imposed from 3 August and she will be eligible to compete again on 3 October.

The Italian's results, points, and prize money from the period following her test until June 7th have been disqualified.

Errani blamed contamination from her mother's breast cancer medication, Femara, which is a brand name for the banned substance, which falls under the hormone and metabolic modulators section of WADA's prohibited list.

Letrozole increases lean body mass and was banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) over concerns it was being abused by bodybuilders.

Errani based her case for mitigation on the fact she had been visiting her parents shortly before her positive test.

In a statement released on her official Twitter account, Errani strenuously denied knowingly taking a banned substance.

The Italian argued that some of the letrozole pills, which were kept in the kitchen might have contaminated foods which she had consumed.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) on Monday revealed the ban for the 29-year-old former French Open finalist who had failed an out-of-competition drug test in February after a urine sample was found to contain letrozole.

A tribunal set-up by the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme ruled that there was no evidence of deliberate cheating.

"I have explained in details all circumstances to the Independent Tribunal, who agreed that the food contamination was the cause of my positive test", Sara Errani said. This would prove that she did not even take an entire pill's amount of the banned substance.
