Mueller Looks at Whether Flynn Was Secretly Paid by Turkey

Senators move to protect special counsel in Russia probe

Special counsel Robert Mueller investigating Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential elections has asked the White House for documents related to former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, according to the New York Times.

Sources say investigators have also asked witnesses if Flynn was secretly paid by the Turkish government. The newspaper said the document request was not a formal subpoena.

Mueller has impaneled a grand jury in Washington for the overarching Russian Federation probe, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday, a sign of the investigation entering a new phase.

Arsenal Defeats Chelsea In The Community Shield
The Gunners pushed for an equaliser, with Arsene Wenger sending on Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott for Lacazette and Alex Iwobi. But Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois blazed his kick over the crossbar followed by striker Alvaro Morata also missing.

But Mueller is reportedly looking into business dealings of Trump and his associates and whether Trump obstructed justice by firing former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey.

Ty Cobb, a White House attorney, likewise declined to confirm or deny the request, telling CBS News in a statement that "the White House will not be discussing any specific communications with the Special Counsel out of respect for the Special Counsel and his process".

Trump has consistently denied any collusion between his campaign and Russian Federation and has called Mueller's probe "a witch hunt".

A grand jury plays a key role in the United States judicial system when it comes to investigating potential crimes and in bringing charges.

According to the Journal, the grand jury in the Russian case has been meeting for several weeks and it could continue to do so for months before charges emerge-if they are brought at all.

Syrian evacuation under way at Lebanon-Syria border
Fighters, families and refugees head to Idlib in bus convoy following deal between Hezbollah and Jabhat Fateh al-Sham. Eight of its fighters were being held by Nusra in Arsal , of whom three were freed on Wednesday and more on Thursday.

If so, an indictment is produced and a case may go to trial. Investigators and prosecutors use grand juries to examine evidence, question witnesses and subpoena documents to determine if a crime has been committed.
