The Transcript Of Trump's Call With Malcolm Turnbull Has Leaked

President Donald Trump apparently didn't understand the refugee deal that he was supposed to discuss with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, according to a transcript of a January call obtained by The Washington Post.

The leaders had some common ground, both slamming the open door policy in Germany on refugees.

TURNBULL: Now Obama thought this deal worked for him and he drove a hard bargain with us - that it was agreed with Obama more than a year ago in the Oval Office, long before the election. "And now I am agreeing to take 2,000 people", Trump said.

Reports at the time of the February conversation, held shortly after the President's inauguration, claimed Mr Trump had said his conversation with Mr Turnbull was "the most unpleasant" of any he had with various world leaders.

The Australian reported that last night, the Washington Post published transcripts of Trump's chat with Turnbull as well as Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

In a similar exchange, he told Mr Trump: "You can certainly say that it was not a deal that you would have done, but you are going to stick with it". This is going to kill me. "It is entirely up to you", the PM said.

"Putin was a pleasant call", Trump said later in the conversation. "As far as I am concerned, that is enough, Malcolm".

Turnbull then tries to explain the details of the deal, repeating over and over again that it does not obligate the United States to take any refugees, only to go through the process of vetting them.

"I am the world's greatest person that does not want to let people into the country", Trump says. "I have been making these calls all day, and this is the most unpleasant call all day".

In exchange, Australia has pledged to take Central American refugees from a centre in Costa Rica - where the USA has taken in a larger number of people in recent years.

He then went on to make clear that "Putin was a pleasant call".

In another exchange Mr Trump asked Mr Turnbull: "Suppose I vet them closely and I do not take any?"

"You have brokered many a stupid deal in business and I respect you, but I guarantee that you broke many a stupid deal", he told Mr Turnbull.

Turnbull replied: "That is the point I have been trying to make". The deal stated the US would prioritize families and children. It is an embarrassment to me, but at least I got you off the hook. "So you put me back on the hook".

The call, like the one with Peña Nieto, quickly became acrimonious. "I will be there again and again".

But despite the pair being involved in a heated war of words between their two fights, Jones paid tribute to Cormier afterwards. He finally regained the belt after being formally stripped of the title in 2015 after his part in a hit-and-run accident.

Mr Turnbull explained the deal was for 1250 to 2000 refugees, but added Mr Trump in the end, after vetting, would not have to take any refugees. He also tries to appeal to the value of commitments in global relations: "Mr. President, I think this will make you look like a man who stands by the commitments of the United States".
