Hamburg Attacker Was Known To Authorities

One person has been killed and several are injured after a stabbing attack in a supermarket in the German city of Hamburg it has emerged

German police have not said explicitly they are investigating a terrorist attack but that all versions are being considered.

The assailant made his way out of the store in the Barmbek district and wounded four more people as he fled - also getting injured himself in the process - but Hamburg police quickly caught up to him.

Torsten Voss, Hamburg state's chief of the Constitutional Protection Office, said the suspect was one of 800 registered Islamists under observation in Hamburg, but that he was so far not linked to any extremist network.

Germany has been hit by a spate of attacks, the deadliest of which struck a Christmas market in Berlin in December 2016, leaving 12 dead.

Hamburg police said the attack involved only one suspect.

A 52-year-old German man was stabbed to death in an Edeka Supermarket.

Police say the assailant attacked the first victim in the supermarket on Friday afternoon and that person died at the scene.

Witnesses described seeing the suspect "indiscriminately" attacking customers before feeling the shop.

Police identified the attacker as a 26-year-old who was born in the United Arab Emirates, but they were unsure of his nationality. There have been reports that he is a Palestinian.

"The jihadist ideology could be used as a justification for action that may actually be motivated by other reason", he said, adding that "the real motives could perhaps lie in the personality of the perpetrator".

He lived in a migrant accommodation centre in Hamburg, which was searched by heavily armed police late Friday according to newspaper Bild.
