Youth Pictures of Florence Henderson: Small Changes We Hardly Notice
Today I got a call from my mom saying that my grandma had a heart attack. Don’t worry, she’s better off in the hospital for a few days instead of melting in the California heat of my mom’s trailer. I had already planned on going to visit my family this weekend, but now it’s turned into some sort of obligation as I sit and try to get through a simple…well not that simple, review. Youth Pictures of Florence Henderson’s EP Small Changes We Hardly Notice is four songs deep, but it’s like an Olympic sized pool deep as each track busts the limits of length. If I had ADHD, this would’ve never gotten done…
Never one for something too different than my usual, this blend of Indie/post-rock had me believing I’d drown as I dived in to “All I Remember is Punk Rock.” From the start, this track reminded me of the intro to Taxi. No, not the Jimmy Fallon classic. I didn’t pick up on the punk rock and maybe it was supposed to be that way ironically?
“Hearts & Consequence” was like an orchestra of sound by the time “But Now You Know” started to play I was distracted my exciting news that caused me to run to my calendar and examine dates to be made. The song didn’t fit my personal moment at all. For the moment was exciting and the track was Coldplay like. But “Swim Team Philosopher” tied everything together as all the actions of my day seemed to culminate into that one run back to my chair to rapidly text a friend back. In that moment as the song played, everything was in slow motion.
Every song sounded as if it were constructed like a big Lego kit with each track consisting of many pieces to make something that appears so simple in the grander scheme of things. You think it’s just It’s just a pirate ship, no, it’s a pirate ship made out of a million little pieces…Think about it…This band may tour with Coldplay one day, who knows? But what we can know right now in this instance is that this Youth Pictures of Florence Henderson is for fans of The Ascent Of Everest and Dorena.
You never know how what your day will be like when you wake up. You fall asleep to the sound of Bob Costas congratulating an Olympian, only to wake up to family dismay and to end it with musical ecstasy.
